A vehicle involved in an accident with either frame breakage or major body or sheet metal damage along with impact to the Steering Column or deployment of supplemental inflatable restraint systems could develop a damaged or misaligned Steering Column. Check the Steering Column bracket assembly capsules to ensure they fit properly within the bracket slots then check for loose conditions by manually pushing and pulling them. Replace only the bracket if the capsules show improper seating condition yet the bracket connects to the jacket assembly through bolting, but change both the bracket and jacket assembly if the bracket uses welding to join them. The bearing and adapter assembly must be checked for tab breakage while examining the
Steering Shaft for sheared injected plastic ; immediate replacement of the Steering Shaft is necessary when sheared plastic is detected. Log on to the specified runout standard of 1.60 mm (0.06 in) for the Steering Shaft using a dial indicator that checks the shaft bottom while rotating the wheel at 350.7 nm (261 lb-ft).
