The first step to replace the
Steering Shaft upper bearing is
Steering Column removal. Start by removing the inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil then proceed to remove the turn signal multifunction switch and the ignition lock cylinder case. Take out the tilt spring while also removing the automatic transmission control. Place the adapter (J 42137) onto the compressor (J 23653-SIR) to take out the Steering Shaft lock plate retaining ring which will then be discarded. During the next step remove the
Turn Signal Switch cancel cam position plate and Turn Signal Switch cancel cam followed by the Steering Shaft upper bearing spring then the Steering Shaft upper bearing inner race seat and Steering Shaft upper bearing inner race from the Steering Column shaft assembly. You must remove both pivot pins from the Steering Column tilt head assembly through use of a pivot pin remover (J 21854-01). Install the tilt lever into the Steering Column tilt head assembly before pulling back on the tilt lever to remove the Steering Column tilt head assembly. To retrieve the Steering Shaft upper bearing you must first remove the anti-rotation pin (J 42640) and tilt lever before extracting the bearing from the Steering Column tilt head assembly. Installation begins by sliding the Steering Shaft upper bearing into the Steering Column tilt head assembly before installing the Steering Column shaft assembly. Nudge the Steering Column tilt head assembly forward until the steering wheel lock shoes become secure. Add gm p/n 12346293 (Canadian P/N 992723) lubricant to the pivot pins before you push them into the Steering Column tilt head assembly. Stake the Steering Column at three points surrounding each pivot pin for secure installation. Install the anti-rotation pin (J 42640) and these components: the Steering Column shaft assembly. Apply gm p/n 12345718 (Canadian P/N 10953516) lubricant to the Steering Shaft upper bearing inner race before installing Steering Shaft upper bearing inner race, inner race seat, and spring. The gm p/n 12377900 (Canadian P/N 10953529) and the Turn Signal Switch cancel cam require lubrication then assembly together with the Turn Signal Switch cancel cam position plate. Using the compressor (J 23653-SIR) and adapter (J 42137) install the new Steering Shaft lock plate retaining ring before installing the automatic transmission control assembly and remaining components including tilt spring, ignition lock cylinder case and turn signal multifunction switch and inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil and Steering Column.
