Chevrolet Malibu Brake Shoe Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to properly service and repair a brake shoe on Chevrolet Malibu?
A: The Brake Shoe replacement starts with vehicle support and continues with tire removal and Brake Drum separation before moving on to brake adjuster components. The adjuster spring along with the adjuster actuator lever needs to be removed from the pivot point. Insert the j 38400 Brake Shoe spanner and spring remover (J 38400) between the Brake Shoe tops to spread them before you extract the adjuster assembly from between its open ends. The j 38400 hook end tool should be placed beneath the universal spring so you can remove the shoe web hole but the universal spring must be firmly held with the tool for Brake Shoe removal. An operator should release the park brake cable from the park brake lever then use the j 38400 to remove the second Brake Shoe. Brake installation requires thin application of high-temperature silicone brake lubricant on both right and left Brake Backing Plates contact surfaces. The proper installation of the trailing shoe requires the j 38400 to position the universal spring into the Brake Shoe web hole. Follow the installation of park brake cable to lever by using the j 38400 to spread brake shoes and install the adjuster assembly. The adjuster assembly requires installation of the adjuster spring after reattaching the adjuster actuator lever while the drum brake system adjustment takes place followed by drum brake assembly and tire reinstallation as well as wheel assembly before lowering the vehicle.
