Chevrolet SSR Air Bag Clockspring Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Air Bag Clockspring on Chevrolet SSR?
A: Starting a Steering Wheel module coil replacement requires disabling the sir system first. Checking that the vehicle maintains straight wheel positioning and a lock set Steering Column prevents sir coil assembly damage when users disconnect steering components from the steering gear. Put in place the Steering Column anti rotation pin (J 42640) and uninstall the Steering Wheel from the Steering Shaft. When dealing with a tilt column vehicle users need to pull the tilt lever directly outward. The first task requires removal of torx® head screws from the lower trim cover before removing the cover itself. Two upper trim cover torx® head screws need removal before you can remove both upper trim covers. First separate the wire harness straps from the Steering Wheel column wire harness before completely removing the retaining ring and air bag clock spring from the Steering Shaft. The original air bag clock spring should get discarded when you replace it. For new air bag clock spring installation keep the vehicle wheels pointed forward while the Steering Column remains in the lock position. Use the horn tower on the turn signal cancel cam assembly to align the air bag clock spring assembly. Push the air bag clock spring onto the Steering Shaft assembly while securing the retaining ring inside the retaining groove. Free the centering tab that comes with the new air bag clock spring. Periodically check the upper trim cover retention using two torx® head screws where the torque specification requires 1.5 n.m (13 lb in) tightening force. Secure the lower trim cover with two torx® head screws while ensuring the tabs from both components match each other. To install the tilt lever handle on vehicles with a tilt column users must align the handle before sliding it into the Steering Column until it locks. The final installation step involves putting the Steering Wheel on the Steering Shaft and enabling your vehicle's sir system.
