GMC Canyon Brake Drum Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the brake drum on GMC Canyon?
A: There is no need to put the accelerator down. Simply shift down with the brake on and continue to hold on to the steering wheel until the vehicle comes to a complete stop. Remove the Brake Drum retainers and Brake Drum. If the Brake Drum does not come off easily, retract the Brake Shoes by removing the rubber adjuster access hole plug at the bottom of the Wheel Cylinder on the rear Brake Backing Plate. Use a small flat bladed tool in through the access hole slightly angled downward and get contact with the adjuster lever and insert a second tool straight in above the first tool to get contact with the adjuster teeth. While gently pressing the first tool, turn the adjuster counter-clockwise with the help of the second tool against the adjuster teeth to retract the brake shoes and be able to remove the Brake Drum. Clean up accumulated dirt or base corrosion on the Brake Drum and the rear axle flange mating surfaces with the help of the j-42450-a (Wheel Hub Resurfacing Kit). Now, adjust the rear drum brakes then install the Brake Drum finally and reinstall the tire and wheel assemble.
