GMC Envoy Automatic Transmission Filter Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Replace the Automatic Transmission Filter and Fluid on GMC Envoy?
A: The replacement process of automatic transmission fluid and filter starts with vehicle support under the transmission Oil Pan using a drain pan. The range selector cable bracket needs to be positioned aside with bolt removal when necessary to achieve clearance for lowering the pan without unhooking the cable. Strike off the Oil Pan Drain Plug if present along with bolt removal which allows pan position for clearance before lowering. To assist fluid drainage the technician should remove front and side Oil Pan bolts and loosely tighten rear bolts around 4 turns followed by gentle rubber mallet tapping of the Oil Pan. The technician should complete draining before removing the available Oil Pan bolts to finally remove the Oil Pan with its attached gasket. Twist the filter until it breaks free from its position while removing the filter seal by using pliers if necessary. Check the fluid color and filter along with searching for clutch material and bronze slivers and steel particles. Solvent must be used to clean both transmission case and Oil Pan gasket surfaces while eliminating any remaining old gasket material. After applying automatic transmission fluid to the new filter seal you should put it into the transmission case while gently tapping with the correct sized socket. You should put the new filter into position before installing first the Oil Pan and new gasket. Install Oil Pan bolts by tightening them alternately across the full circle to 11 nm (97 inch lbs.). When the range selector cable bracket was removed, reinstall it then bolt it to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). The manufacturer recommends applying gm p/n 12346004 sealant onto the Oil Pan Drain Plug threads before installation when the plug exists. Tighten the plug to 13 ft. Lbs. Of torque. The service technician will lower the vehicle while adding dexron(r) iii transmission fluid to the proper level but only measures the cold fluid level during the first fill. Afterward, they will check for Oil Pan gasket leaks.
