GMC Savana 3500 Air Bag Clockspring Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to replace the Air Bag Clockspring in the steering wheel module on GMC Savana 3500?
A: To replace the inflatable restraint Steering Wheel module coil, the sir system should be disabled first. Make sure the wheels on the vehicle are straight ahead and the steering column anti rotation pin (J 42640) is installed or the ignition switch is in lock. Take off 2 torx(R) head screws from the lower trim cover and take off the cover, if applicable, straight, remove the Steering Wheel from the Steering Shaft. Next, remove two torx(R) head screws from the upper trim cover and remove that as well. Remove the wire harness straps from the Steering Wheel column wire harness, and desparage the retainer of the air bag clock spring from the Steering Shaft and extract the coil to the Steering Shaft. In case of replacement, dispose of the old air bag clock spring. For installation, check again that the wheels are straight ahead or the steering column anti rotation pin (J42640) is installed or the ign switch is in the lock position. Make sure to center the new air bag clock spring assembly, and do not remove the centering tab until complete installation. Bring the air bag clock spring assembly into alignment with the horn tower on the way to the turn signal cancel cam assembly, slide onto the Steering Shaft assembly, firmly seat the retaining ring into the groove. Remove and discard the centering tab from the new air bag clock spring and install the upper trim cover with 2 torx(R) head screws, tightening it to 1.5 n.m (13 lb in). Next, secure the lower trim cover in place with 2 torx(R) head screws, making sure that tabs click into place, and tighten the screws to the same torque. In case of vehicles with tilt column, align & slide the tilt lever handle into the steering column until it locks. Lastly, mount the Steering Wheel to the Steering Shaft and activate the sir system.
