A replacement of the powertrain control module (PCM) requires the Ignition Switch to be turned off in order to protect the internal components. Check the pcm connector gaskets for proper installation because they are essential to blocking contaminants. Clean all debris from the pcm connector areas. The new pcm needs programming as a key step before installation. A compatible scan tool should be used to obtain and save the engine oil life percentage before programming because an unprogrammed value defaults to 100% which requires an oil change at 5000 km (3,000 mi) from the last service. As a first step disconnect the negative
Battery Cable and also remove the engine harness clip from the pcm cover when the vehicle features the allison transmission regular production option (M74). After releasing the pcm cover mounting tabs you can take out the cover itself. The pcm electrical connector bolts need to be loosened while the ignition is off to prevent connector damage when connecting or disconnecting the pcm to its connector. You should disconnect pcm electrical connectors before you release the spring latch and mounting tabs to remove the pcm. When installing the new pcm users should secure its mounting tabs while tightening the spring latch at the same time followed by electrical connector connection before securing the bolts with a torque of 8 n.m (71 lb in). The installation requires reconnecting the negative Battery Cable and applying pcm programming when a new unit was installed.
