GMC Yukon Neutral Safety Switch Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to replace the Neutral Safety Switch on a 4L80-E/4L85-E transmission on GMC Yukon?
A: The first step to replace the park/neutral position switch on 4l80-e/4l85-e transmissions requires using the park brake and shifting into the neutral position. The removal of the front propeller shaft must occur before beginning work because the vehicle includes 4-wheel drive. Follow these steps to replace the park/neutral position (PNP) switch electrical connector and remove the range selector cable end from the range selector lever ball stud. Begin by taking out the control lever and manual shaft nut before you remove the control lever from the manual shaft, pnp switch bolts, and pnp switch from the transmission. File the outer manual shaft perimeter to eliminate burrs since the pnp switch fails to detach from the manual shaft. Align the pnp switch against manual shaft flats before sliding it onto the manual shaft keeping the switch mounting bracket against the transmission mounting bosses. If a new pnp switch is being installed, it will come with a positive assurance bracket, making the use of the park neutral switch aligner unnecessary; secure the pnp switch bolts only until they reach finger-tightness. Position the j 41364-a park neutral switch aligner (J 41364-A) on the pnp switch with the tool's lower tabs inserted into each slot of the switch. Adjust the j 41364-a to line up its top locating pin with the switch opening while tightening fasteners to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). Cut off the j 41364-a from pnp switch and remove positive assurance bracket if present. Install the control lever to the manual shaft with the nut, tightening it to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.)the range selector cable end should be fitted to the range selector lever ball stud before connecting the pnp switch electrical connector. If equipped with 4wd, reinstall the front propeller shaft, lower the vehicle, and check the pnp switch for proper operation, ensuring the engine starts only in the park (P) or neutral (N) positions; install a new switch when the defective unit shows improper functioning.
