Extension Seal, Rear

Vehicle elevation and removal of transfer case shield along with rear propeller shaft is the first step to replace the rear transfer case output shaft seal. Examine the rear output shaft bushing for wear patterns while you remove its rear output shaft seal. Apply the j 45380 transfer case rear bushing remover and installer to remove the rear output shaft bushing by inserting the fingers ahead of the bushing then connecting the tube and forcing screw which can be extracted with a wrench. Installing the new rear output shaft bushing requires the j 45380 tool which positions the part correctly and places the drain hole of the rear output shaft seal seal in the downward position. Follow these steps to install the transfer case rear output shaft seal via the output shaft seal installer (J 33843): reinstall the rear propeller shaft after which you should monitor the transfer case fluid level then position the transfer case shield and finally lower the vehicle.

The first task for front transfer case output shaft seal replacement requires that you properly elevate the vehicle. Locate both the transfer case shield and front propeller shaft which needs to come off from the transfer case. Remove both the transfer case front output shaft dust seal and the front output shaft seal as the next installation step. The front output shaft repair procedure begins with mounting the front output shaft seal protector (J 44636-2) onto the transfer case front output shaft before inserting the front output shaft seal onto the protector. Install the front output shaft seal using the front output shaft seal installer (J 44636-1) after which remove the installer along with protector from the shaft. The last step includes installing the front output shaft dust seal after reattaching the front propeller shaft and checking the transfer case fluid level as well as reinstalling the shield before lowering the vehicle.

The procedure to replace the rear transfer case output shaft seal begins with vehicle lifting and subsequent removal of the transfer case shield and then the rear propeller shaft. The procedure for changing one-piece rear propeller shafts needs proper attention while two-piece configuration replacements require similar steps. Check the rear output shaft bushing for damage after removing its seal before conducting an inspection. Use the transfer case rear bushing remover and installer (J45380) to perform the removal by placing finger sections before the bushing then attaching tube and forcing screw before wrench removal. Use j45380 to install a new rear output shaft bushing by applying the tool to the case position the bushing then insert it with a hammer. The drain hole on the boot of the rear output shaft seal should be oriented at the bottom position. The transfer case rear output shaft seal must first be installed by hand before use of the output shaft seal installer (J33843) completes the insertion process into the transfer case. Replace the rear propeller shaft before checking the transfer case fluid level and then reinstall the shield and lower the vehicle.

Install the front output shaft seal onto the protector, then use the Front Output Shaft Seal Installer (J 44636-1) to install the seal.

First, raise the vehicle.

Reinstall the front output shaft dust seal, attach the front propeller shaft to the transfer case, check the transfer case fluid level, reattach the transfer case shield, and lower the vehicle.

Remove the transfer case assembly, taking care not to damage the sealing surfaces of the transfer cases or shafts during seal removal.

Check the transfer case oil level and add oil as necessary.

Reattach the rear propeller shaft to the transfer case, check the transfer case fluid level, and finally reinstall the transfer case shield before lowering the vehicle.
