2000 Buick Century Brake Calipers Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the front brake calipers on 2000 Buick Century?
A: Place the vehicle in a safe position then drain the master cylinder by one-third of its brake fluid. Locate the wheel position on the hub before taking the tires and wheel out. To access the rear rotor, apply a large c-clamp on top of the brake caliper and tighten until the caliper piston completley pushes into its bore. Do not suspend mechanical calipers from their flexible tubes because it can harm them. Take off the brake hose bolt at the inlet fitting only when you plan to repair the brake caliper. Keep it connected when replacing pads alone. Block fluid release points on the caliper casing and pipe system before removing caliper bolts to move the caliper assembly off the braking wheel and bracket. Test both bolt boots for fuel or damage while replacing them if destruction exists then examine the piston boot condition. Examine the caliper bolts for rust or damage and change them to new parts at once when corrosion appears. Set the caliper housing over the rotor and caliper bracket while making sure the bushings are correctly engaged. Use silicone grease on the caliper bolts but never apply it to their threaded area. Also insert silicone grease into the two bolt boots at the caliper bracket. Push the bolt boot over the shoulder of the caliper bolt using a screwdriver until the boot sets properly in its groove. Fasten the caliper bolts to 85 nm torque settings but change the steel gaskets. Put back the brake hose bolt then tighten it to 54 nm (40 ft. Lbs.). Replace the brake rotor on the hub by unwinding and reinstalling the wheel nuts. Then put wheels and tire back onto the vehicle before lowering it. Add new brake fluid at the right amount and cleanse the caliper by bleeding if you removed the inlet fitting. Close the brake pedal fully three times after completing the bleeding process. During the conclusion step check the hydraulic brake system for signs of brake fluid leakage.
