- Q: How to replace the rear brake calipers on 2001 Buick Century?A: Begin by checking the brake master cylinder fluid level. Ensure that you reduce the fluid volume when the reservoir shows more than halfway between maximum and minimum allowed areas. Rest the vehicle using lifts then take off the back wheel while keeping the rotor secured with lug nuts by hand. Position a massive c-clamp on top of the brake caliper to push the piston toward the caliper bore until you can slide the caliper from the rotor. Take off the brake hose-to-caliper bolt and remove the two copper brake hose gaskets for discarding. Protect the rear brake hose opening from fluid loss by plugging it securely and steering clear of using tools to clamp it. Detach bolts 1 and 3 from the caliper assembly then remove it together with the rotor and caliper bracket. Examine the caliper bracket bolt boots for damage then replace them when needed. Also check for corrosion and damage on caliper bolts before using new parts. Before installation put the caliper on top of the rotor and bracket while making sure bushings remain aligned. Use silicone grease to treat both caliper bolts (1 and 3) by applying it to their smooth surfaces and not the threaded parts. Also apply silicone grease to the two bolt boots (13 and 4) assetted in the caliper bracket. Secure the bolts 1 and 3 into the caliper by tightening them to 44 nm (32 ft. Lbs.) when boot fits properly without getting damaged. Attach the brake hose bolt with new copper brake hose gaskets to the brake hose and install the brake hose-to-caliper bolt while tightening it to 54 nm (40 ft. Lbs.). To complete brake service install the tire and wheel assembly then put the vehicle down. Proceed by filling the master cylinder with new brake fluid till reaching the required level then test for fluid leaks.
