- Q: What Tools Are Required for a Front Brake Calipers Overhaul on 2002 Buick Century?A: A front brake caliper overhaul needs the caliper piston seal installer tool j 35777. When you extract the front brake caliper carefully keep your fingers away from the caliper piston area when applying compressed air because the piston(s) can explode out forcefully hurting you. Put clean cloths inside the caliper housing before air pressure pushes the pistons through the bores. Use the fluid inlet opening to pass compressed air at low pressure and take out the caliper piston from the caliper bores. Use a small wood or plastic tool to take out and throw away the caliper dust boot seal by removing it from the seal counterbore position in the caliper . Then grab the piston seal from the inside of the caliper . Take off the bleeder valve and its cap from the caliper. Dip the caliper piston, seal counterbore, and piston bore in denatured alcohol before blowing them clean with non-lubed filtered air. Check the caliper opening for damage and signs of rust and corrosion. If small amounts remain, try to wipe it off with fine sandpaper, else switch to a new caliper component. When severe damage is found you should replace both the caliper and the assembly. Determine if the caliper piston requires replacement when you find broken or damaged parts during inspection. Apply delco supreme ii brake fluid (GM part number 12377967) or equivalent dot-3 fluid from a sealed source onto the new piston seal. Install the lubricated piston seal into its bore. Insert the caliper piston into the bore until it reaches the bottom while setting it up. You can then place the new dust boot seal over the piston. Push the caliper piston seal into the counterbore using the caliper piston seal installer (J 35777) and then apply the bleeder valve and cap tightly to the caliper. Put the brake caliper into its position on the vehicle at the end.
