2004 Buick Century Brake Calipers Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the rear brake calipers on 2004 Buick Century?
A: In order to replace the rear brake caliper, start by checking the fluid level in the brake master cylinder reservoir; if it is above the midway point between the maximum full and minimum allowable levels, be sure to remove fluid up to that midpoint. Lift up the vehicle and remove the back tire and wheel, tightening two lug nuts by hand to keep the rotor to the hub. Apply a large c-clamp over the top of brake caliper up against the back of the outboard brake pad, and tighten it up until the caliper piston gets all the way into caliper bore so you could slide the caliper off of the rotor. Debend the c- clamp and brake hose -to-caliper bolt and dispose of 2 copper brake hose gaskets. Plug the hole at the rear brake hose so that no fluid leaks and contamination occurs, then remove the caliper bolts (1 and 3) and remove the caliper from the rotor and caliper bracket. Examine the caliper bracket bolt boots for cuts, tears or deterioration, replace any damaged boots and examine caliper bolts for corrosion and damage, change to new bolts and bushings if needed. For installation, align the caliper over the rotor , apart from the caliper bracket , and make sure the bushings are there. Lubricate the caliper bolts (1 and 3) with silicone grease, not on the threads and the 2 bolt boots (13 and 4) in the caliper bracket as well. Replace the caliper bolts (1 and 3), and make sure the bolt boots sit without pushing through into the rear sealing surface, and tighten the bolts to 44 nm (32 ft. Lbs.). Mount the brake hose bolt using the new copper brake hose gaskets to the brake hose and secure the brake hose-to-caliper bolt with a torque of 54 nm (40 ft. Lbs.). Unscrew 2 wheel lug nuts that attach the rotor to hub, put the rear tire and wheel assembly back, lower the vehicle, refill the master cylinder to the correct level using fresh brake fluid, bleed the brake system, and inspect the hydraulic braking system for leaks.
