- Q: How to replace the front brake pads (J56) on 2005 Cadillac STS?A: Before working on the front brake pads you should check the fluid level in the brake master cylinder reservoir. If the fluid sits between the middle point and the lowest acceptable position no removal is needed but you must reduce the fluid to the center point when the level is above this range. Lift the vehicle and detach the wheel to reach the brake pads. Press the lower end of the retainer part while hitting its guide pin with a hammer and punch to push it toward the caliper, then work the Brake Pad retainer upwards to take it out. Press on the top caliper near the Brake Pad mounting pin to push it inside. For piston compression always use a plastic flat-bladed trim tool to push both pistons into their bore positions when inserted between the rotor and Brake Pad. Pull the brake pads off their location in the caliper. Check the brake caliper guide pins for any signs of damage or corrosion and replace them entirely. Also examine the Brake Caliper Piston boot for integrity and replace if necessary. Push one Brake Pad through the caliper then insert the upper caliper guide pin above them. Seat the launched pin using a punch and hammer. Setup the Brake Pad retainer under the upper caliper pin assembly before rotating it downwards while pressing on its bottom section. Push the lower caliper guide pin through the plate and pads while you seat it in the same manner as before. Reposition the tire and wheel components then lower the vehicle. Use the key to turn off the engine before slowly moving the Brake Pedal to its 2/3 mark then easing pressure. Keep pressing the Brake Pedal for 15 seconds followed by 15 more seconds until you reach the desired firm brake response to position brake caliper pistons and pads effectively. Top off brake fluid in the reservoir and create smooth rotors while brakes caliper pads work.
