2006 Cadillac STS Brake Pad Parts and Q&A
- Q: How to replace the front brake pads (JE5) on 2006 Cadillac STS?A: First, inspect the fluid level in the brake master cylinder reservoir when replacing the front brake pads (JE5); if above the midway point between these two, ie to maximum-full and minimum allowable remove the fluid there. Lift and support the vehicle, and then, eliminate the tire and wheel assembly. Use a large c-clamp to compress the caliper pistons into the caliper bore before it slides pass the brake rotor and takes off the c-clamp. Relieve the bolt of brake caliper lower pin while holding guide pin with a wrench, then remove the bolt. Lift the body of the brake caliper upward and apply to it heavy mechanic's cord with not tension applied to hydric brake flexible cortex. Take off the brake pads from the caliper bracket and check for Brake Pad retainers. Check the brake caliper guide pin bolts for damage, and damage and damage; and replace it if so; caliper guide pin boots should also be in the caliper guide pin retaining seat, and the caliper boot seal retaining seat. Check guide pins and boots of brake caliper for any damage, replace if needed. Push outward on the caliper guide pin, with a pull for proper seating. Check the Brake Caliper Piston boot and replace it if any damage is evident. Press the back (downward and forward) of brake piston using a large c-clamp to compress the pistons fully into caliper borings, remove the c-clamp plus frozen Brake Pad or wood block. Mount the Brake Pad retainers and the new brake pads on the caliper bracket, then rotate the brake caliper down over the pads. When reusing the lower caliper pin bolt, clean out the threads and use threadlocker gm p/n 12345493 (Canadian P/N 10953488) on 2/3 of its length and allow it to cure for about 10 minutes. Apply a light amount of niglube (R) gm p/n 18046532 grease on the front brake caliper guide pin, and then install and tighten the lower brake caliper pin bolt to 34 nm (25 ft. Lbs.). Reassemble the tire and wheel assembly, lower the vehicle and with the engine not running, press the Brake Pedal to about 2/3 and then slowly release it. Wait for 15 seconds and then repeat till a firm pedal is developed so that the caliper chair brakes and the rear clip are seated. Finally, refill the brake master cylinder reservoir with the correct amount and burn the pads and rotors.
