    Q: How to replace the front disc brake pads (J56) on Cadillac STS?
    A: Before replacing the j56 front brake pads check the brake master cylinder reservoir fluid level. Drain fluid when the level is above half way between the maximum-full and minimum marks. Place the vehicle on a lift and take out the tire setup when the vehicle rests on supports. Push the retainer down from the lower side and hit the lower caliper guide pin through with a hammer and punch tool to push it into the caliper. Rotate the retainer to free the Brake Pad holder. The brake caliper mounting pin in its upper position must be tapped into the caliper assembly. A plastic flat-bladed trim tool should be used to push caliper pistons into caliper piston bores through the rotor and both brake pads. One stroke of equal pressure should fully compress each piston before repeating for the opposite side. Take brake pads out from their position inside the caliper. When checking the brake caliper guide pins examine damage or corrosion and check the Brake Caliper Piston boot for issues requiring replacement. Place new brake pads inside the caliper and pass the upper caliper guide pin through all components. Hit the pin gently with a hammer and punch tool to complete installation. Position the Brake Pad retainer under the top caliper pin part and turn it downward before pushing the lower end firmly. Hit the caliper guide pin lower end through the caliper and pads until it reaches the Brake Pad retainer. Make sure the retainer rests in the center of the arrangement. Reinstall the tire and wheel assembly. Lower the vehicle. Then apply the brake pedal by hand while keeping the engine off until it reaches one-third its travel length before releasing it slowly. Press the brake pedal 15 seconds at a time until the brake pedal feels firm to make sure brake caliper pistons and pads stay correctly in position. As the last step add fluid to the master cylinder until the level matches specifications before running the wheel-brake system to smooth out the brake components.
