  • Q: How to replace the front disc brake pads (JL9) on 2008 Cadillac STS?
    A: Before starting work on front disc brake pads (JL9), check the brake master cylinder reservoir fluid level and drain off excess fluid when the reservoir sits between maximum-full and minimum allowable levels. Position the vehicle on jack stands and take off both tire and wheel components. Press a large c-clamp onto the caliper pistons to push them into the bore space and let the caliper move by the rotor before removing the clamp. While holding the guide pin with a wrench, safely remove lower pin bolt of the caliper with your hands. Safely anchor the brake caliper with mechanic wire to hold the flexible brake hose. Raise the caliper up and take out the brake pads from their bracket. Check guide pin bolts and pins of Brake Calipers for damage or rust and replace both parts when necessary. Also examine and replace guide pin boots and piston boot if they show signs of wear. Position a big c-clamp opposite the caliper body while engaging an old Brake Pad or wood block then fasten it until all pistons reach their fully compressed state. Put the c-clamp aside and take out the old pad or pad holder before placing the Brake Pad retainers and new brake pads on the caliper bracket. Position the brake caliper downward into the bracket and make sure threads on the lower pin bolt are free from debris. Afterward apply threadlocker gm part number 12345493 (Canadian Part Number 10953488) on two-thirds of the pin bolt length before letting the threadlocker dry for 10 minutes. Attach the guide pin bolt over the high-temperature silicone lube treatment and snap it into place within ten minutes. Tighten the bolt to 63 n.m (46 lb ft) after lubricating the threadlocker with gm p/n 12345493 (Canadian P/N 10953488). Put back the tire and wheel before changing down the vehicle. Press the Brake Pedal gently from start to 2/3rds with the engine off and ease off the pressure after that. Keep pressing the Brake Pedal until it meets the right resistance which lets the brake pads fully contact the caliper pistons. The final step requires topping up the brake fluid reservoir to the right level while carefully working with brake components.
