  • Q: How to replace the rear disc brake pads (J56) on 2008 Cadillac STS?
    A: The brake system can work without additional fluid when the brake master cylinder reservoir shows fluid between its highest and lowest marks. Before work start raise the vehicle and remove both wheel and tire parts. Press the lower Brake Pad retainer while hitting the hammer and punch tool to push the lower guide pin into the caliper from the bottom end. Rotate the retainer and remove it. Press the top end of the caliper to push the Brake Pad fitting out of its place. Insert a plastic flat-bladed trim tool through the rotor and pad to fully press brake pistons into the bore; repeat with the tool between the rotor and outboard pad. Take the brake pads out of their position within the caliper. Thoroughly examine brake caliper guide pins for signs of harm before replacing them and test the Brake Caliper Piston boot for damage with replacement if it needs it. Position the new brake pads inside the caliper before inserting the upper caliper guide pin through all parts. Use a hammer and punch to seat the pin into place. Set the Brake Pad retainer under the upper caliper pin assembly and turn it down while pushing on its lower end. Insert the lower caliper guide pin through the caliper and Brake Pad components. Place it in position just like before and make sure the Brake Pad retainer remains centered. Lower the vehicle and reinstall the wheel and tire before pressing the Brake Pedal to about two-thirds of its length while keeping the engine off. Press the Brake Pedal 15 times with intervals to push the brake pistons and pads fully into their correct positions. Complete your task by pouring brake fluid to its required amount then doing light riding to help the brake pads and rotors work smoothly.
