- Q: How to replace the rear disc brake pads (JL9, JE5) on 2007 Cadillac STS?A: Before starting with rear disc Brake Pad replacement for jl9 or je5 pads check the brake master cylinder reservoir fluid level. You should remove fluid from the reservoir until it sits at the midway point between maximum and minimum markings. First support the vehicle before removing the wheel assembly and tire from its position. A large c-clamp should be used to compress the caliper piston into its bore before the caliper can slide around the brake rotor. Next remove the clamp. Disengage the lower caliper pin bolt by applying a wrench to the guide pin then sustain the caliper using heavy mechanic wire to protect the flexible hydraulic brake hose. After moving the caliper to a vertical position remove the brake pads while checking the Brake Pad retainers. When installing new brakes check the guide pin bolts and pins for any signs of damage or corrosion before replacement, further inspect the guide pin seals and piston boot for deterioration. Reinstall the Brake Pad retainers following the caliper piston compression with the large c-clamp. Proceed with installation of new brake pads avoiding the damage to the wear sensor alignment. Wipe down the threaded surface of the lower caliper pin bolt with denatured alcohol before applying a threadlocker gm p/n 12345493 (Canadian P/N 10953488) on two-thirds of the thread length. After a ten-minute curing period for the threadlocker users can apply high-temperature silicone lube to the guide pin followed by lower brake caliper pin bolt installation and tightening until it reaches 60 n.m (44 lb ft). Install the tire and wheel assembly before lowering the vehicle until the engine is off and slowly push Brake Pedal to reach about 2/3 of its extent before transitioning to smooth release. Follow the procedure several times until you reach a solid Brake Pedal response then add fluid to the master cylinder tank before pad and rotor burnishing.
