- Q: How to replace the rear disc brake pads (J56) on 2009 Cadillac STS?A: To replace the rear disc brake pads (J56), first check the master cylinder (M/C) level (brake reservoir). If the level is at the middle between the maximum and minimum points, there is no need to withdraw the fluid. Lift and support the vehicle, and remove the tire and wheel assembly. While holding the down end of the retainer, use a hammer and punch and tap the lower caliper guide pin into the caliper and then rotate on an removing break pad retainer. Tap the upper mounting pin of caliper to Brake Pad inward of the caliper. Do not use a metal hand tool, car body tool, or the wheel bearings to try and push the pistons into the bore. Push the tool between the rotor and inboard Brake Pad, press it until its inner pistons were compressed fully, and then do the same for the outboard Brake Pad. Take the brake pads off of the caliper. Check the brake caliper guide pins and replace if damaged or corroded and inspect the Brake Caliper Piston boot for damage, replacing if required. Put in the new brake pads into the caliper, and put in the upper caliper guide pin through the brake pads and caliper and seat it in with a hammer and punch.install the Brake Pad retainer under the upper caliper pin assembly, rotate it down, and apply pressure downward on the lower end of the retainer.place in the lower caliper guide pin through the caliper and brake pads,seating it as previously with the Brake Pad retainer centered. Reattach the tire and wheel assembly, lower the vehicle, and while with the engine switched off, follow the instruction below: slowly press the Brake Pedal to approximately 2/3 of the travel distance, but then release it gradually. Wait for another 15 seconds and try it again until you are able to get a firm Brake Pedal that will ensure the placement of caliper pistons and brake pads. Finally, top off the brake master cylinder reservoir and burnish the Brake Pad and rotors.
