  • Q: How to replace the rear disc brake pads (J56) on 2010 Cadillac STS?
    A: In order to replace the rear disc brake pads (J56), first check the master cylinder reservoir brake fluid amount; if the level falls in between the maximum or the minimum points no fluid has to be removed. Lift and support your vehicle then check the alloy, tire and wheel assembly off. Grasp the lower end of the retainer down, take a hammer and punch and carefully hit the lower caliper guide pin inwards and remove it out of the caliper, rotate and remove Brake Pad retainer. Tap the upper caliper to breaking pad mounting pin inward out of the caliper. Compress the caliper pistons into the bores using only a plastic flat-bladed trim tool; insert the tool between the rotor and inboard Brake Pad and apply pressure until both inner pistons are completely compressed, and do the same for the outboard Brake Pad. Pull out the brake pads from the caliper. Examine brake caliper guide pins and replace if they are damaged, corroded or inspect caliper piston boot for a damage and replace if needed. Add the new brake pads into the caliper, then add the top caliper guide available, which should be passed through the caliper and brake pads and hammered into place using a hammer and punch. Mount the Brake Pad retainer in between the upper caliper pin assembly, turn it and apply the pressure downwards on the lower part of the retainer. Mount the lower caliper guide pin through the brake caliper and the brake pads and position it as done before allowing the Brake Pad retainer to be positioned centrally. Inflate the tire back, with the engine off, step on the Brake Pedal to around 2/3 of its travel then slowly lift your foot off it. Wait for 15 seconds more and repeat until a solid brake is formed that will correctly position the caliper pistons and the brake pads. Finally, top up the brake master cylinder reservoir up to the correct level and burnish the pads and rotors.
