- Q: How to replace the front disc brake pads (J56) on 2010 Cadillac STS?A: Check the brake master cylinder reservoir fluid before starting. Lower it to the midway point when it shows above that level. First lift the vehicle while keeping it stable, then disconnect the tire and wheel components. Use a hammer and punch tool to push the lower caliper guide pin inside of the caliper, starting from the bottom and then twist to remove the Brake Pad retainer. Press the upper part of the caliper toward the Brake Pad mounting pin. Push in the brake caliper pistons using a flat plastic trim tool while inserting it between the rotor and inboard Brake Pad. Keep applying pressure until both pistons become fully compressed on the inboard side then repeat the same process on the outboard Brake Pad. Take the brake pads out through their space in the caliper. Evaluate brake caliper guide pins for damage or corrosion then replace them, additionally inspect the Brake Caliper Piston boot for damage and replace if needed. Press the upper caliper guide pin through the caliper and brake pads before fixing it in place using a hammer and a punch. Apply downward pressure at the lower end of the retainer as you position it underneath the upper caliper pin structure. Insert the lower caliper guide pin through the caliper and brake pads then press it down as normal while centering the Brake Pad retainer. Put back the tire and wheel parts then lower the vehicle. Use brake pedal gently twice before releasing when engine power is off. Maintain this action until you reach a strong brake pedal action because the brake caliper pistons and pads now sit in place correctly. Afterwards top up the brake system fluid to its required amount and complete Brake Pad and rotor preparation.
