• Q: How to replace the rear brake pads on 2005 Cadillac XLR?

  A: Before working on the rear brake pads check the brake master cylinder reservoir fluid level. If the fluid sits between its high and low marks no fluid needs to be drained. Lift your vehicle safely and take out both tire and wheel parts. Tighten one wheel nut just enough to keep the rotor fixed to the hub. Secure the brake caliper in position using a large c-clamp fitted across its ends with a wood block resting on the caliper piston then sliding it steadily until the piston moves freely past the brake rotor. Use mechanic's wire to hold the caliper when you unscrew its guide pin bolts and slide the brake caliper off easily without harming the hydraulic brake hose. Check Brake Pad retainers while taking off the brake caliper from its bracket and brake pads from the piston housing.
