Cadillac XLR Brake Pad Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the front disc brake pads on Cadillac XLR?
    A:
First, you need to check the level of fluid in the brake master cylinder reservoir, in order to replace the front disc brake-pads. If it is half distance between maximum-full point and minimum allowable levels then no fluid should be removed but if it is by inches higher then trim off from the point till the mid point. Lift and support the vehicle, and then remove the tire and wheel assembly. Hand tighten a lug nut to fix the rotor to the hub. Use a large c-clamp over the brake caliper and here the ends against the rear of the caliper body and an old innboard brain pad or wood block against the caliper pistons tighten it until the caliper pistons are compressed enough to slide past the brake rotor. Remove the c-clamp, lower the brake caliper guide pin bolt, suspend the brake caliper using heavy mechanic wire to avoid the brake hose being damaged, but do not remove it. Pivot the caliper downwards and secure it in a way that there is no tension on the hose, then take off the brake pads and inspect the Brake Pad retainers. Check the caliper slide boots for wear and repair. Replace the big c-clamp to compress the caliper pistons again (completely this time), then take it off with the old Brake Pad or a block of wood. Install the new brake pads and the Brake Pad retainers, taking care to place the Brake Pad wear sensor at the right location. Pivot the brake caliper upward into the caliper bracket and install the top brake caliper guide pin bolt, torquing it to 31 n.m (23 lb ft). Again, reinstall the tire and wheel assembly, lower vehicle, while with the engine turned off equally apply the Brake Pedal gradually till almost 2/3 its travel then slowly release it. Do this 15 seconds at a time, repeat until a firm Brake Pedal and properly seat the caliper pistons and brake pads. Lastly, check the brake master cylinder reservoir and fill it to the appropriate level and burnish the pads and rotors.
