2009 Cadillac XLR Brake Pad Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the rear disc brake pads on 2009 Cadillac XLR?
A: Begin by checking the brake master cylinder reservoir fluid level. When you see the fluid between its highest and lowest settings, there is no need to drain any fluid. Place your vehicle on ramps and take off the tire and wheel unit. Use hand force to fasten a wheel lug nut that connects the rotor to the hub. Put a large c-clamp over the brake caliper body at its back. Clamp an old Brake Pad or wood block against the piston while tightening until the caliper piston can slide past the brake rotor. Support the caliper with mechanic wire as you remove its guide pin bolts to avoid damaging the hydraulic brake hose. Check the condition of the Brake Pad retainers by removing the caliper bracket and brake pads from their places. Look for damage on the caliper slide boots and get replacements if needed. Use the large c-clamp to press the caliper piston while inserting it into the compressed area then take out both tools plus the Brake Pad or wood block. Secure the Brake Pad retainers and new brake pads onto their places while putting the Brake Pad wear sensor in its accurate position. Reconnect the brake caliper to its bracket using guide pin bolts which you should tighten to 31 nm (23 lb ft). Place the tire and wheel unit back in place and down the vehicle. When the engine is off, start to press the Brake Pedal halfway through followed by a slow release. Refine the brake system until you get a proper Brake Pedal response before adding brake fluid up to specifications and running Brake Pad and rotor grinding operations.
