  • Q: How to replace the front disc brake pads on 2009 Cadillac XLR?
    A: Begin the front disc Brake Pad replacement process by checking brake master cylinder fluid levels; drain the fluid when the level stands above the defined midpoint between limits. Lift the vehicle and take off the tire and wheel unit for replacement. Keep the rotor attached to hub by turning the wheel lug nut by hand. Place a c-clamp over the brake caliper and push both ends against the back of the caliper body while securing an old Brake Pad or wooden block on top of the caliper pistons. Tighten the clamp until the pistons can move past the brake rotor. Use mechanic wire to support the brake caliper after you remove both items - the c-clamp and upper brake caliper guide pin bolt. Keep the flexible brake hose safe from damage. After securing the caliper upside down with no hose tension remove brake pads to inspect Brake Pad holders. Look for damage on the caliper slide boots and replace them when needed. Put back the big c-clamp to push the brake caliper pistons fully compressed before taking it and the worn Brake Pad when done. Fit the Brake Pad retainers to their slots and place new brake pads onto them with the wear sensor correctly lined up. Straighten the brake caliper back into its bracket and screw the upper guide pin bolt at 31 nm (23 lb ft). Put back the tire and wheel components then lower the vehicle. When the engine is off push and release the brake pedal to 2/3 its travel slowly. Continuously pump the brake pedal until it feels strong then top up the master cylinder with brake fluid to the proper mark while braking the wheels.
