2006 Cadillac CTS Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Rack and Pinion with right-hand drive (RHD) on 2006 Cadillac CTS?
A: Beginning rhd Rack And Pinion installation requires the removal of the Steering Column anti-rotation pin (J 42640) on the Steering Column and next removal of front tires and wheels before doing the front air deflector. Begin by removing the intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt to break the connection between this shaft and Rack And Pinion stub shaft before damage occurs. Disconnection of the Steering Column or intermediate shaft from the Rack And Pinion requires both wheels in straight forward position and Steering Column placement in lock position to prevent coil assembly uncentering. Use the steering linkage and tie rod puller (J 24319-B) to disconnect the outer tie rod from steering knuckles after removal of Rack And Pinion bolts and its intermediate shaft from the Rack And Pinion and outer tie rod nuts. Begin by detaching the Rack And Pinion electrical connector for variable effort steering when needed. Next, position a drain pan under the vehicle so you can uninstall the pressure and return lines from the Rack And Pinion. First remove the Rack And Pinion return line retainer bolt along with the Rack And Pinion bolts before extracting the Rack And Pinion through the right wheel opening. During a Rack And Pinion replacement move the outer tie rods to the new component. The Rack And Pinion installation requires two steps: first position it through the left wheel opening then tighten Rack And Pinion bolts to 95 nm (70 ft. Lbs.) before securing the Rack And Pinion return line retainer bolt with a torque of 9 nm (80 inch lbs.). After reinstalling the stabilizer shaft users must connect new pressure and return lines to the Rack And Pinion using tightening torque set to 30 nm (22 ft. Lbs.). Users must also install new seals on the Rack And Pinion lines before finalizing the installation. Reattach the variable effort steering electrical connector only when needed and then attach the outer tie rod end to steering knuckles through nut installation at 70 nm (52 ft. Lbs.). Use the Rack And Pinion to connect the intermediate shaft then tighten the intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt to 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.). To finish the task you must replace the front air deflector followed by tires and wheels then you should remove the Steering Column anti-rotation pin (J 42640) and complete Rack And Pinion bleeding and eliminate front toe misalignment.
