2005 Cadillac CTS Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Rack and Pinion on left-hand drive on 2005 Cadillac CTS?
A: The first step to change the Rack And Pinion in left-hand drive vehicles requires installation of the Steering Column anti-rotation pin (J 42640) into the Steering Column. The first step requires removal of both front wheel components and front air deflector. After you remove the intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt you need to disconnect the intermediate shaft from the Rack And Pinion stub shaft to protect the components. Lock the Steering Column to position lock while maintaining a straight ahead alignment of vehicle wheels before beginning to disconnect the intermediate shaft or Steering Column. Remove the intermediate shaft from Rack And Pinion before removing the outer tie rod nuts. The steering linkage and tie rod puller (J 24319-B) removes the outer tie rod from the steering knuckles. You must disconnect the Rack And Pinion's variable effort steering electrical connector if required. Collect fluid in a drain pan below the vehicle then remove Rack And Pinion pressure and return lines before uninstalling both Rack And Pinion pressure line retainer bolt and Rack And Pinion bolts. When changing out Rack And Pinion units you should take them through the left wheel opening while transferring any installed outer tie rods. The new Rack And Pinion must pass through the left wheel opening before securing its bolts to 95 nm (70 ft. Lbs.). Insert the Rack And Pinion pressure line retainer bolt before torqueing it to 9 nm (80 inch lbs.). The stabilizer shaft installation should be followed by connecting the Rack And Pinion pressure and return lines. Tighten all fittings to 30 nm (22 ft. Lbs.) before installing new seals on the lines. Once the variable effort steering electrical connector is reconnected you should install the outer tie rod end on the steering knuckles while tightening the outer tie rod nuts to 70 nm (52 ft. Lbs.). Secure at 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.) the intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt after connecting it to the Rack And Pinion. After reinstalling the front air deflector and tires and wheels you must extract the Steering Column anti-rotation pin (J 42640) from the Steering Column before bleeding the Rack And Pinion system and performing front toe adjustment.
