- Q: How to replace the primary cam gear and timing chain on 2006 Cadillac DTS?A: In order to replace the timing chain and sprockets, one should start with the Oil Pump removal. Align the timing marks using the crankshaft socket-4.0l and 4.6l (J39946). Subsequently, pull off the secondary timing chains, the timing chain tensioner, and the camshaft intermediate sprocket retaining bolt. Remove the main chain, crank gear, and camshaft in-between sprocket together. Clean the camshaft timing components and then inspect prior to installation. Among other requirements, align the timing marks of the camshaft intermediate and crankshaft sprockets vertically in the installed position. Mount the main timing chain on the drive sprocket, with the no.1 piston at the top dead center (TDC) and crankshaft keyway at the 1 o'clock notch. Use the j39946 to align the crankshaft key with the drive sprocket, following, the timing chain, crankshaft sprocket, and camshaft intermediate sprocket, as an assembly. Mount and tighten the camshaft intermediate sprocket retaining bolt to 60 nm (44 ft. Lbs.). Make sure you do not remove the pin that holds tension until the secondary timing chains have been set. Mount the timing chain tensioner, the secondary timing chains. Remove the pin from the timing chain tensioner release lever, check the timing marks to be aligned vertically, and finally, install the Oil Pump.
