- Q: How to replace the steering knuckle in the rear suspension on 2006 Cadillac STS?A: Start by lifting and suspending the vehicle before eliminating the tire and wheel and the rear brake rotor. The first step is to discard the wheel driveshaft nut before disconnecting the antilock brake system (ABS) sensor harness connector and the abs sensor harness connector from the backing plate. First detach the Parking Brake Cable from the parking brake lever before disconnecting it from the knuckle and removing its bracket. Use the Ball Joint remover (J 43631) to separate the ball stud from the knuckle after removing the upper Ball Joint mounting nut. A suitable jack must support the lower Control Arm as the technician removes the lower shock mounting bolt along with the Trailing Arm to knuckle mounting bolts and nuts and the lower Control Arm to knuckle mounting bolt and the adjustment link to knuckle mounting bolt. Use the axle remover (J 45859) or an equivalent utility on the wheel bearing/hub to separate it from the drive axle. If additional help is needed use the Wheel Hub remover to finish the separation. Use the axle remover (J 45859) or equivalent to separate the wheel drive shaft from the wheel bearing/hub before removing the knuckle from the vehicle and wheel bearing/hub bolts to remove the knuckle along with backing plate from the wheel bearing/hub. Begin by mounting the knuckle together with backing plate on the wheel bearing/hub then tighten the wheel bearing/hub mounting bolts to 125 nm (92 ft. Lbs.). Secure the installation by first fitting the knuckle to the vehicle while leaving fasteners loose until tight. Then apply 160 nm (118 ft. Lbs.) of torque to the adjustment link on the knuckle mounting bolt. Mount the Trailing Arm to its knuckle mounting bolt and nut before torquing to 170 nm (125 ft. Lbs.). Then tighten the lower shock mounting bolt to 150 nm (111 ft. Lbs.) followed by the lower Control Arm to knuckle mounting bolt. Install the upper Ball Joint to the knuckle then apply the upper Ball Joint mounting nut. Reinstall the Parking Brake Cable bracket on the knuckle while you disconnect the jack and connect the abs sensor electrical connector to the backing plate and the abs sensor electrical connector. Start by attaching a new wheel drive shaft nut before tightening it to 160 nm (118 ft. Lbs.) and adding the brake rotor then the tire and wheel before lowering the vehicle.
