  • Q: How to replace the engine front timing cover on 2008 Buick Lucerne?
    A: To replace the engine front cover, you drain the engine oil and the cooling system first. Lower the vehicle and slacken the Water Pump Pulley bolts and remove the drive belt tensioner as well as the Water Pump Pulley. Take off the crankshaft balancer by repositioning the Power Steering Pump and lifting the vehicle. Do not destroy the crankshaft. Remove the crankshaft front oil seal pry out and disconnect the wiring harness of the Ignition Control Module from the ckp and cmp sensor, engine harness from the oil pressure sensor. You should now remove the ckp sensor shield, and then use the hose clamp pliers (J 38185) to adjust the radiator outlet hose clamp, before you disconnect the radiator outlet hose. Lower the vehicle, use engine support fixture (J 44618-B), and raise the vehicle again to remove Oil Filter and engine mount brackets. Pull off the engine harness from the oil level sensor, remove the oil level sensor, oil pan to engine front cover bolts, and the pan. Then, unbolt the ckp sensor, studs and sensor. Then the bolts for the engine front cover and the cover itself, as well as the gasket. To replace the engine front cover, extract the Oil Filter adapter bolts, the adapter and the gasket, the oil pressure relief valve and spring, the Water Pump bolts, the Water Pump and the gasket, the screws attaching the oil pump cover, the oil pump cover and the oil pump gear set. Check the Timing Chain and sprockets for wear and clean both water and oil pumps. For installation, in replacement of engine front cover, fit cmp sensor and bolt, apply petroleum jelly to oil pump gear set, and oil pump gear set. Apply the petroleum jelly packed oil pump gears, and fix the oil pump cover and screws, the position of the Water Pump Gasket, and the Water Pump followed by Water Pump bolts tightened preferably using the angle meter (J-45059). Install the spring and valve of the pressure relief valve, place the Oil Filter adapter gasket and the adapter and fasten the adapter bolts. Put a new engine front cover gasket, put sealer on the engine front cover bolts, and bolt on cover and bolts and tighten through angle meter (J 45059). Mount the ckp sensor and studs then tighten the Oil Pan and also mount oil level sensor. Connect the engine harness to the oil level sensor, the Oil Filter, and the engine mount bracket. Lower the vehicle, unbolt the engine support fixture (J 44618-B) and raise the vehicle once more to install the radiator outlet hose and place the hose clamp with the hose clamp pliers (J 38185). Finally, use the seal installer, tia, complete crankshaft front oil seal to the point where the bolt contacts the crankshaft oil seal and install the ckp sensor shield, hook up the electrical connectors and crankshaft balancer. Lower the vehicle and mount the Power Steering Pump, the Water Pump Pulley, and the drive belt tensioner, tightening all of the bolts according to the specified torque. Equip the cooling system and crankcase with oil and check for leaks, and perform ckp system variation learn procedure.
