2008 Chevrolet Equinox Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the A/C Clutch assembly on 2008 Chevrolet Equinox?
A: Vehicle technicians must remove the compressor before starting compressor clutch assembly replacement. The Universal Spanner Wrench (J 37872) must grip the compressor clutch before the bolt securing the compressor clutch to the compressor can be removed. Secure the Clutch Remover (GE-47849) onto the compressor clutch before you use it to extract the clutch off the compressor. After removing the compressor clutch shims from the shaft of the compressor you must pull off the snap ring from the compressor pulley. The process of removing the compressor pulley from the compressor requires combination of the Center Puller (GE-47850) with the Three Jaw Puller (J 25031-A). Start compressor clutch field coil removal by taking out the connector bracket screw and screws on the clutch field coil followed by field coil extraction from the compressor. After cleaning both components you can reconnect the clutch field coil to the compressor. Establish a torque of 4.9 N.m (43 lb in) for clutch field coil screws and 4.3 N.m (38 lb in) for the clutch field coil connector bracket screw. Install the compressor pulley using the Armature Replacer (GE-47851) by positioning the snap ring so its rounded face points upward. First install the snap ring to the compressor pulley then position the compressor clutch shims onto the compressor shaft. Position the compressor shaft in alignment with the compressor clutch before installation. Finish by using the Armature Replacer (GE-47851) to lock the compressor clutch to the compressor. You must use a feeler gauge to check that the compressor clutch maintains a 0.3 mm to 0.6 mm distance (0.012 in to 0.024 in) with the compressor pulley. When the proper air gap is obtained use the Universal Spanner Wrench (J 37872) to grip the compressor clutch while torquing the new clutch bolt to 21 N.m (16 lb ft). Make sure the compressor pulley turns easily before you reinstall the compressor onto the vehicle.
