2008 Chevrolet HHR Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: What tools are required to service and repair the valve guide seal, replace the valve stem oil seal, and valve spring on 2008 Chevrolet HHR?
A: To service and repair the Valve Stem Oil Seal, as well as also replacing the Valve Stem Oil Seal and valve spring, one will require the following tools: valve spring compressor (J43649), Valve Stem Oil Seal remover (J36017), flywheel holding tool (J43653) and sprocket holding tool (J43655). Start with a stop of the Crankshaft as it would injure sprocket holding tool (J 43655) while taking compressed air in the chamber. For manual shift, put your car in first gear with the vehicle on the ground and the parking brake in. For automatic transmission, remove the Starter, and for manual transmissions disconnect the flywheel and bolt. Install flywheel holding tool (J 43653) and remove Camshaft and the camshafts roller followers. Mount the front part of the valve spring compressor (J 43649) to the second Camshaft cover bolt hole and attach the rest of the parts to the cylinder head. Take out the spark plugs and put an Air Hose adapter in the place of the spark plugs and connect an Air Hose and pressurize the cylinder 690 kpa (100 psi). Use the valve spring compressor (J 43649) to compress the valve spring and take the keepers, the retainer and the spring off. Further remove the valve seal using Valve Stem Oil Seal remover (J 36017) and then install a new valve seal using the same tool making sure that it is seated onto the valve guide properly. Reinstall the valve spring, retainer, and keepers, followed by removal of the Air Hose and the adapter from the Spark Plug hole. Remove valve spring compressor (J 43649), inserting spark plugs, Camshaft roller followers and Camshaft. Lastly, if it is applied, unbolt the flywheel holding tool (J 43653) and replace the Starter if it has been taken out.
