Chevrolet Avalanche 1500 Wheel Hub Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to replace the rear axle wheel hub, wheel bearing, and wheel seal on Chevrolet Avalanche 1500?
A: To replace rear axle hub, bearing, cup, or seal, start by lifting the vehicle and removing the tire and wheel assembly after the brake caliper and Axle Shaft. Then remove the axle nut retaining ring and the key, then tie the adjusting nut with the help of the wheel bearing nut wrench (J2222-C) before reviving the adjusting nut. Remove the hub from the axle housing and, if needed, discard the rotor. By using an appropriate seal extraction tool, remove the oil seal from the wheel hub, which will remove the inner hub and the inner hub bearing cup. Do this by gently striking them using brass drift and hammer. First, take off the retaining ring from the wheel hub, after that remove the outer hub bearing and bearing cup using the wheel bearing race installer - outer (J24426) and universal driver handle (J8092). For installation make good the outer and inner wheel bearings together with their corresponding cups and the axle housing with a light coating of ep bearing lubricant of high melting point. Mount the outer bearing and cup into the wheel hub, using the hub outer bearing race installer (J44419) and universal driver handle (J8092) to drive in the bearing cup. Make sure that the retaining ring is fully seated to its groove then install the inner bearing cup using the wheel bearing race installer - inner (J24427) and the universal driver handle (J8092), drive it in. Mount the inner bearing and a new oil seal with the use of differential bearing and hub seal installer (J44420) and universal driver handle (J8092). If required, reassemble the rotor, apply a lubricant to the axle housing spindle, and then fast the wheel hub to the axle housing. With the use of the wheel bearing nut wrench (J2222-C), install the adjusting nut, adjust the wheel bearings and reinstall the Axle Shaft, brake caliper and tire and wheel assembly. Lastly, check and pour axle lubricant to the axle housing if required and then let the vehicle down.
