The Starter of Chevrolet Cobalt is responsible for power to turn the engine and is needed to turn electrical energy into mechanical by the battery. It works through an externally mounted solenoid together with a battery which engages the starter motor. In the starter, there is a rotating armature which through the interaction with the field coils or permanent magnets produces the required torque. The starter drive couples with the flywheel of the engine when the switch is flicked to ignite and an overrunning clutch uncouples it when the engine is running. Different types of starters have been used in the Cobalt, these include; gear reduction starters where a reduction gear is used to engage the drive, thus improving on efficiency. As with every other OE starters, they may not be well suited for high-compression motors, and this may culminate in a failure. For high-rev applications or any other performance application, it is wise to use an upgrade or a specialized starter in order to prevent problems such as kickback.
