The first step in replacing the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) on the 4L60-m/E & 4L65-E is lifting the vehicle, which is followed by the removal of the transmission pan, assembling the required tools, and loosening its bell and the plastic plate. From the side, disconnect the VSS wiring and its connector to prepare the area for changing the VSS component. Unplug the electrical connector from the speed sensor and loose the bolt that holds it. Remove the speed sensor and O-ring seal, and check both the seal and the transmission case which need to be replaced, if necessary. For installation, place the speed sensor and the O-ring seal back in the transmission, making sure to install the bolt, according to the Fastener Notice in Service Precautions, should be tightened to 11 Nm (97 inch lbs.). Finally, reconnect the electrical connector to speed sensor, and lower the vehicle.
