Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Air Bag Clockspring Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to Remove and Replace the Air Bag Clockspring Assembly on Chevrolet Silverado 1500?
A: Installation of the air bag clock spring assembly / spiral cable requires initial wheel alignment at a 90-degree angle followed by Steering Wheel immobilization through installation of the anti-rotation pin (J 42640) or Steering Column lock or secure strap to protect the sir system. Steer safely without rotating the wheel or moving the front tires through the disconnect process because wheel motion could shift the sir coil assembly away from its centered position. Perform monitoring of wheel position prior to coil removal from the inflatable restraint Steering Wheel module so ensure that the wheels face forward and an anti-rotation pin (J 42640) is set in place or ignition in lock position. First disconnect the Steering Wheel electrical connectors while separate the Steering Column shroud. Then discard the inflatable restraint Steering Wheel module coil retaining ring by removing it. Dismiss the original coil when replacement is necessary. When installing new sir coil assemblies always position them right in the center before removing centering tabs after the installation process finishes. Insert the inflatable restraint Steering Wheel module coil toward the horn tower on the turn signal switch cancel cam then position the coil onto the Steering Shaft by seating its new retaining ring into the shaft's groove. After completing installation of the new coil assembly replace the discarded centering tab while reconnecting electrical connectors and installing the Steering Column shroud followed by installing the Steering Wheel until you remove the anti-rotation pin (J 42640).
