    Q:
How to service the Engine Control Module (ECM) on GMC Savana 2500? Posted by Customer
    A:
Service of the Engine Control Module (ECM) requires a new ecm installation or eeprom programming. Replace only the correct ecm component before you take out the old ecm and put in the new service ecm. Turn the ignition off whenever you work with control module connectors and disconnect power to prevent damage inside the components. The metal case of the control module must stay away from battery voltage at all times while touching either the connector pins or components will lead to electrostatic discharge damage. Check all surfaces around the control module connector for debris before inspecting the connector gaskets for proper installation to block contaminants from entering. Programming is mandatory for the substitute control module. Before separating the negative Battery Cable utilize a scan tool to note down the present engine oil life percentage. First disconnect the electrical connectors from the engine wiring harness on the ecm then free the bracket tabs and remove the ecm from its mount. Check the bracket tabs for full insertion before installing the ecm then proceed to reconnect all engine wiring harness electrical connectors and the negative Battery Cable. A new ecm requires proper programming and its life of engine oil should be programmed using a scan tool.

    Q:
Why is it important to record the remaining engine oil life for the 2010 Chevrolet Silverado 1500? Posted by Customer
    A:
Failure to program the replacement module with this information will default the engine oil life to 100 percent, necessitating an oil change at 5,000 km (3,000 mi) from the last change.
