2001 Chevrolet Corvette Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the A/C Orifice Tube on 2001 Chevrolet Corvette?
A: The first step for changing the A/C Orifice Tube involves refrigerant recovery. Before proceeding remove the front evaporator tube to rear evaporator tube retaining bolt. The process requires you to immediately cover the open rear evaporator tube with a cap or tape for contaminant prevention before disconnecting the front tube from the rear tube and eventually disposing of the O-ring while you secure the open front tube. The vehicle repair technician must use Orifice Tube Remover J 26549-E to pull out the A/C Orifice Tube. The A/C Orifice Tube requires inspection for signs of a broken plastic frame, torn or damaged filter screen (1, 2), damage to the brass A/C Orifice Tube or appearance of metal chips on the filter screen. When necessary, replace the tube. The tube allows for reuse only when a fresh O-ring has been installed. Begin installation by removing tape or caps from both ends of the front evaporator tube and then insert the tube with its short filter screen directed to the outlet. You should first clean the sealing surfaces of both tubes using a lint-free cloth after removing the tape or cap from the rear evaporator tube. Apply a small amount of mineral base 525 viscosity refrigerant oil to the O-ring seal but avoid letting oil enter into the refrigeration system. Push the new O-ring seal onto the front evaporator tube until it reaches its seat position while keeping the indicated area dry with refrigerant oil. The front evaporator tube requires attachment to the rear evaporator tube followed by bolt installation then torque it to 25 N.m (18 lb ft). After the refrigerant evacuation and system charging complete the leak test using Halogen Leak Detector (J 39400-A) on the fittings.
