• Q: How to replace the rear brake pads on 2003 Cadillac CTS?

  A: Start replacing the rear brake pads only after checking the brake master cylinder reservoir fluid level. No fluid needs to be drained when the level stays within the marked range. When the vehicle is on stands you should take off both the tire and wheel. Position a large c-clamp over the brake caliper body but keep the ends next to the rotor backside and outer Brake Pad. Tighten this clamp to push the caliper piston until it moves past the rotor surface. Keep the brake caliper guide pin steady using wrenches to easily detach the lower brake caliper pin bolt. Fix the brake caliper securely with tool wire then lift it up and take out its brake pads with retainers from the mounting bracket. Check the guide pin bolts and pins of the brake caliper for signs of damage or corrosion before replacing them. Also examine the seal on the guide pin and the piston boot for wear and replace as required. Place a c-clamp on top of the caliper to press the piston. Place the ends against a used Brake Pad or wood block, tighten the c-clamp until the piston is compressed, then remove the clamp and pad or block before further work. Before installation rotate the caliper inside its bracket threads and apply threadlocker product gm 12345493 (Canadian P/N 10953488) on two-thirds of the bolt length. Use silicone lube on the guide pin before installing the lower pin bolt and torquing it to 60 n.m against the vehicle. Place the tire and wheel back on the vehicle then lower it. Apply the brake gently to two-thirds of its range when the engine is off before releasing it slowly. Follow these steps until the pedal becomes solid and finish by filling the brake container to its recommended level then enabling the pad and rotor.
