2006 Chevrolet Equinox Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the A/C Clutch assembly on 2006 Chevrolet Equinox?
A: The replacement process of the compressor clutch assembly starts with compressor removal from the vehicle. The compressor clutch stays in place using the Universal Spanner Wrench (J 37872) while you remove the bolt which joins the compressor to the clutch. Hook the Clutch Remover tool (GE-47849) onto the compressor clutch before extracting the clutch off the compressor. Start by removing compressor clutch shims from the shaft followed by extracting the compressor pulley snap ring. A combination of the Center Puller (GE-47850) and the Three Jaw Puller (J 25031-A) will safely remove the compressor pulley from the compressor. Next on the list is to detach both clutch field coil connector bracket screw and clutch field coil screws from the compressor so you can remove the clutch field coil. After surface cleaning the clutch field coil and mounting surfaces of the compressor install the clutch field coil using screws tightened to 4.9 N.m (43 lb in). Fasten down the clutch field coil connector bracket screw until it reaches 3 N.m (27 lb in) of torque. Place the compressor pulley into the compressor through the Armature Replacer (GE-47851) while positioning the snap ring's rounded edge to face upwards. Install the compressor clutch shims on the compressor shaft before aligning the compressor clutch to the shaft then re-install it. Place the compressor clutch onto the compressor through the Armature Replacer (GE-47851). Check the compressor pulley and clutch gap with a feeler gauge must be 0.3 mm to 0.6 mm (0.012 in to 0.024 in). First install the new clutch bolt after you achieve the proper air gap between components. Then secure the compressor clutch with the Universal Spanner Wrench (J 37872) during bolt tightening until the bolt reaches 20 N.m (15 lb ft). Complete the installation by verifying pulley motion then placing the compressor back into the vehicle.
