How to replace the brake shoes on GMC Safari?

A vehicle must be raised followed by eliminating the tire and wheel assembly as the first step to replace brake shoes. Drawing marks on the relation between Brake Drum and axle should come before Brake Drum removal. You must detach the Brake Shoe return springs and Brake Shoe guide as well as the hold down springs and hold down pins in the next step. Start by removing the actuator lever pivot along with the lever return spring and parking brake strut and strut spring and parking brake lever. After removing the brake shoes users should extract both adjusting screw assembly pieces with their respective springs. Check all components for discoloration indicating heat damage or material distress and change out all markedly worn parts. Look for leaks in the Wheel Cylinder and perform maintenance or buy a new one when needed before examining the Brake Drum for signs of wear and machine precision. Apply high temperature silicone lubricant to the Brake Shoe backing plate and adjusting screw threads and socket and socket face before installing though avoid mixing right and left adjusting screws. Put the brake shoes and adjusting screw assembly together while keeping the coils a sufficient distance from the adjusting screw. Fasten brake shoes to backing plate yet conduct installation of parking brake lever and strut spring alongside parking brake strut. Begin with the actuator lever and its pivot followed by the actuator lever return spring along with hold down pins and hold down springs and Brake Shoe guide and Brake Shoe return springs. During reinstallation begin with the Brake Drum placement then line it up with the previous installation marks before putting the tire back and adjusting the brakes and lowering the vehicle.

How to replace the brake shoes on GMC Jimmy?

Start Brake Shoe replacement by using safety stands to support the vehicle and then taking off the tire and wheel assembly. Record the location of the drum relative to the hub before taking off the Brake Drum from the axle. Start by handling brake dust carefully and then remove the Brake Shoe return springs along with Brake Shoe guide and actuator link and two hold down springs followed by two hold down pins after which you need to remove actuator lever and actuator lever pivot and actuator lever return spring and park brake strut and strut spring and park brake lever and brake shoes. Examine all Brake Shoe parts after removing the adjusting screw assembly along with its spring to check for heat or stress discoloration while replacing any damaged components. The brake Wheel Cylinder should be checked for leaks and the Brake Drum needs inspection to determine finding scoring and machining specifications. Installation requires application of gm p/n 1052196 or equivalent lubricant to the Brake Shoe backing plate alongside adjusting screw threads, socket and socket face with a minimum amount while avoiding swapping right and left adjusting screws. Hardware installation of brake shoes should include fitting the adjusting screw assembly along with the adjusting screw spring while ensuring the coils stay separate from the adjusting screw. Brake shoes must be mounted on the backing plate and users need to install the park brake lever then the strut spring before adding the park brake strut and actuator lever along with lever pivot and actuator lever return spring followed by two hold down pins and two hold down springs before the addition of Brake Shoe guide and the actuator link and Brake Shoe return springs. The Brake Drum installation requires aligning it according to disassembly marks before reattaching the tire and wheel assembly and performing brake adjustments followed by safety stand removal to lower the vehicle.

How to replace the brake shoes on GMC Canyon?

The necessary tools for Brake Shoe replacement include drum to Brake Shoe clearance gage (J 21177-A) and Brake Shoe spanner & spring remover (J 38400). First lift the vehicle while you remove its rear Brake Drum component. Before removing the brake return spring users should clean the rear brake shoes with denatured alcohol and adjust them to their lowest position in order to reduce spring tension. Start by removing the adjuster assembly and subsequently removing the retractor spring from the secondary Brake Shoe via channel locks before you take off the secondary Brake Shoe from the backing plate. Rephrase the procedure for the main Brake Shoe and remove its retractor spring at the same time. The pocket flat-blade screwdriver should be used to press the lock tab for the park brake cable until the retainer releases it after removing the return spring. Detach the park brake cable from the lever but keep the return spring on the cable during removal. Silicone grease must be applied to the Brake Shoe-backing plate joint where installation will begin and the park brake cable must be inserted into its lever until a snap or audible click signals proper seating. Fasten the retractor spring onto the backing plate while using channel locks to fix it into the primary Brake Shoe. Install the secondary Brake Shoe on the backing plate while using the Brake Shoe spanner & spring remover (J 38400) or channel locks to place the retractor spring within the secondary Brake Shoe. Fit the park brake adjusting hardware then adjust the rear brake shoes by using the specified Brake Shoe adjusting tool (J 22364-01). Lower the vehicle while installing the rear Brake Drum as the final step.

Start by removing the adjuster assembly and subsequently removing the retractor spring from the secondary Brake Shoe via channel locks before you take off the secondary Brake Shoe from the backing plate. Rephrase the procedure for the main Brake Shoe and remove its retractor spring at the same time. The pocket flat-blade screwdriver should be used to press the lock tab for the park brake cable until the retainer releases it after removing the return spring.
