Replacement of the Engine Control Module (ECM) requires either one to program electrically erasable programmable read-only memory (EEPROM) or to install a new ecm unit. Check the replacement ecm is the right component before taking out the broken ecm and putting in the newly installed service ecm. It is essential to shut off the ignition before working with control module connectors anddisconnecting or reconnecting power because this protects the internal components from harm. The metal case of control modules must be kept away from battery voltage when serving control modules and handling pins or components that require soldering will prevent electrostatic discharge damage. A thorough cleaning of the control module connector surfaces must occur first followed by checking for correct alignment of the connector gaskets to stop the entry of contaminants. The programming of the new control module requires immediate attention followed by documentation of remaining engine oil life because absence of this programming will set engine oil life to 100 percent leading to a required oil change at 5,000 km (3,000 mi) from last oil change. Initiate removal procedures by using a diagnostic tool to obtain and mark down the current engine oil life percentage before unplugging the negative battery terminal. To replace the ecm it is necessary to separate the engine harness connector retainer locks so that you can disconnect the connectors from the module. Drain the ecm out of its bracket by detaching the bracket retainer tabs from the bracket. Install the ecm by slotting its bottom into the ecm bracket tab until it secures then mate the engine wiring harness electrical connectors before engaging their retainers. Completion of the task requires reattaching the negative battery terminal while instructing the ecm programming process when installing a fresh component.

Engine Control Module service requires ecm replacement and eeprom programming as one solution. The correct replacement ecm needs to be verified before removing the malfunctions ecm and placing the new service ecm into position. Turn off the ignition completely before working with connectors and dis/connecting power to avoid equipment breakdown inside the units. The metal case of control modules should stay away from battery voltage and you should not handle the pin connectors or solder joints to avoid electrostatic discharge damage. Check the control module connector area for debris before looking for proper gasket installation to block contaminant entry. Any update software process on the new control module should include recording engine oil life metrics because this omission sets default engine oil requirements to 100 percent which requires an oil change at 5000 km (3,000 mi) after the previous change. The percentage of engine oil remaining life must be retrieved using a scan tool followed by recording it. First disconnect the negative Battery Cable while you disconnect all engine wiring harness electrical connectors from the ecm. Pull away the tabs which secure the ecm bracket before taking out the ecm from its positioning. Position the ecm into its bracket before securing it by letting the bracket tabs reach inside the unit then secure the engine wiring harness connectors. After reconnecting the negative Battery Cable, program any new ecms according to the necessary procedures. A scan tool can be used for determining and setting the engine oil lifetime.

Avoid contact between the metal case of the control module and battery voltage, and do not touch the connector pins or soldered components to avoid electrostatic discharge.

Disconnect the negative battery cable, disengage the upper and lower electrical connector retainers, and remove the ECM.

Disengage the engine wiring harness electrical connector retainers and remove the connectors from the ECM.

Engage the retainers for both the upper and lower electrical connectors.
