    Q:
How to replace the outer CV Boot and CV Joint of the rear wheel drive shaft on Chevrolet Equinox? Posted by Customer
    A:
Begin by removing the wheel drive shaft from the vehicle before securing it in a soft-jawed vice to prevent damaging the inboard or outboard boot sealing surface. To replace a low-profile boot clamp shaft start by discarding both the outer boot clamp and inner boot clamp of the CV joint boot before removing it from the CV joint housing. The boot clamp assembly on shafts with ear type clamps should have the outer clamp and inner clamp removed from the CV joint boot before extracting the CV joint with a hammer and wooden block tool from the wheel drive shaft. The wheel drive shaft retaining ring must be removed with J 8059 followed by removing the CV joint boot. A CV joint needs replacement when it runs dry of lubrication or shows signs of contamination. When assembling the boot and clamp to the wheel drive shaft you should avoid crimping while making sure the boot rests inside the groove of the shaft. Use J 8059 to install the retaining ring before setting the boot clamp with J 35910 to obtain a 2.15 mm (0.085 in) gap. Press down the retaining ring into its groove to permit installation of the inner CV joint with precise contact against the ring. The wheel drive shaft needs a block of wood along with a hammer to install the CV joint before adding lubricant half into the boot and the other half into the joint and clearing extra lubricant. J 35910 should be used to close the boot clamp when working alongside a torque or ratchet wrench and a breaker bar until the gap reaches 1.9 mm (0.070 in). After that, perform 4 to 5 circular movements with the CV joint to disperse the lubricant. Put away the wheel drive shaft from the vise before reinstalling it.
