Backing Plate

A proper Brake Backing Plate replacement procedure begins with vehicle elevation plus proper support and continues with tire removal followed by wheel assembly clearance followed by Brake Drum removal then Brake Shoe removal. Initiate by extracting the universal spring and the Wheel Cylinder from the system followed by disconnecting the Parking Brake Cable from the backing plate. Next follow the procedure to remove the rear Wheel Hub and the backing plate. Installation starts with new backing plate positioning then adding the rear Wheel Hub before reattaching the Parking Brake Cable to the backing plate. The Wheel Cylinder and universal spring join brake shoes for installation before riders adjust the drum brakes. After installing the Brake Drum complete the installation process by bleeding the brake hydraulic system then adjusting the parking brake and ending with tire and wheel installation followed by vehicle lowering.

To install the new Brake Backing Plate for the rear wheels you need to support the vehicle while raising it and take off both rear tires and wheels. Release tension from the park brake system while working on the equalizer before removing components at the rear caliper and rotor. Disconnect the park brake cable from both its connections at the rear wheel bracket and disengage the park brake cable return spring from the actuator at the wheel bracket. The entire assembly behind the rear hub including the backing plate with its park brake actuator and cable bracket needs to be removed. First detach the two holders from the park brake actuator and remove the park brake cable bracket. Pull out the brake shoe along with actuator from the backing plate. Mount park brake components, finding first their position on the backing plate while bringing the whole assembly into place over the rear hub. Install the park brake cable bracket along with its two retainers. Put in the rear wheel hub and join the rear park brake cable to its bracket at the rear rim. Additionally, attach the park brake cable return spring to the park brake actuator and rear wheel mount. First mount the rear rotor and caliper bracket system. Then install the rear wheels and tires on top. Complete the system by adjusting the park brake at the equalizer before placing the car on the ground.

Begin backing plate service by raising the vehicle and supporting it properly before removing the wheel and tire assembly that matches the work area. Begin repairs by taking the Brake Drum(s) accompanied by brake shoes followed by Wheel Cylinder removal. Separate the Parking Brake Cable from the backing plate followed by removing the rear Wheel Hub before extracting the backing plate. You should start by installing the backing plate prior to installing the rear Wheel Hub. Starting with restoration of the Parking Brake Cable to the backing plate users should proceed by installing both the Wheel Cylinder and brake shoes. Install brake drums afterward and perform brake hydraulic system bleeding. The final steps include adjusting the drum brakes and parking brakes before reinstalling the tire and wheel while lowering the vehicle.

The replacement procedure for brake backing plates starts by securing the vehicle at height before proceeding. Prevent bending the components by avoiding contact with the backing plate or splash shield since this could result in brake pulsation and chatter. Start by taking out both the tire and wheel then detach the Brake Drum followed by the brake shoes and the park brake actuator which controls the park brake cable. The key procedure for backing plate replacement starts with disconnection of the park brake cable from the backing plate followed by consecutive removal of the Wheel Cylinder and wheel bearing/hub and eventual removal of the backing plate. Putting the new backing plate in place should be the first installation step followed by wheel bearing/hub assembly together with the Wheel Cylinder installation. Reinstall the park brake cable onto the backing plate followed by attaching the park brake actuator to the cable. Complete the installation by putting back the Brake Drum and wheel along with tire as well as brake shoes and finally lowering the vehicle.

Place the park brake shoe and actuator onto the backing plate, then position this assembly over the rear hub. Install the park brake cable bracket and the two retainers, followed by the rear hub.

Remove the tires and wheels, followed by the brake shoes.

Remove the park brake shoe and lining from the park brake support plate.

Place the new backing plate.
