Every Engine Control Module (ECM) replacement process begins with retrieving the current engine oil life percentage through a scan tool. Pulling the negative Battery Cable in combination with upper and lower connector retainer disengagement allows the removal of ecm connectors from their position. The next step requires detachment of the retainer tabs holding the ecm to the bracket before extracting the ecm. First insert the bottom ecm tabs into the bracket and then apply pressure to push the ecm which makes it secure. Thoroughly connect the electrical connectors by inserting them into retainers that attach to the upper and lower sections. When completing ecm programming always verify the engine oil life input is correct to prevent defaulting to 100% usage that will instruct an early oil change at the 5,000 km (3,000 mi) limit.

The fuel system of a vehicle built with E85 compatibility needs to contain ASTM gasoline containing no more than 10 percent ethanol when the ECM or PCM is replaced or when a scan tool resets the alcohol content learning. The engine system requires at least 1 liter of fuel consumption along with operating temperature for it to detect and accept the correct alcohol content if ASTM gasoline needs to replace the existing fuel in the system. ASTM gasoline and ASTM E85 fuel operability becomes possible following the fuel change.

The service process for engine control modules demands substitution of ecm systems or execution of eeprom programming. Before switching to a new ecm ensure the installed part matches the specific requirements correctly. The proper operation of the ecm requires you to turn off the ignition before disconnecting or reconnecting electrical power that affects the Battery Cable and ecm pigtail and ecm Fuse and jumper cables. Clear all debris from ecm connector surfaces before handling ecm module connector gaskets to install them properly in order to block intrusion. The new ecm needs to undergo programming procedures. The first step of removal requires scanning the vehicle to obtain and document engine oil life percentage because omitting this step will set oil life to default 100 percent and trigger premature oil change at 5000 km (3,000 mi). Start the replacement process by removing the wheelhouse filler panel followed by disconnecting the ecm electrical harness connectors before taking out the ecm with its bracket and vehicle. Start by positioning the ecm onto the ecm bracket followed by connector attachment and torquing to 8 n.m (70 lb in). Reinstall the wheelhouse filler panel before performing any required programming of the new ecm through the system.

A safe procedure starts with turning off the ignition system when replacing or uninstalling connectors attached to the Engine Control Module (ECM) and its power connections that encompass Battery Cable and control module fuse. The control module metal case must not come into contact with battery voltage and touching either connector pins or soldered components leads to electrostatic discharge damage. Prior to servicing the control module one should conduct debris removal from connector surfaces and double-check the gaskets for correct installation to stop contaminant intrusion. A scan tool should be used to record the life span of engine oil and automatic transmission fluid. Failure to program these values into the new control module will force the system to initialize default values at 5000 km (3,000 mi) and 83000 km (50,000 mi) respectively. Disengaging the ecm retainer from the battery shield occurs by sliding it toward the back before removing both components from the shield. Break the negative battery connection as well as remove the two engine wiring harness electrical connectors from the ecm. Install the ecm by connecting its two engine wiring harness electrical connectors followed by putting it back on the battery shield before secure the retainer into place. First place the ecm and retainer on the top of the battery shield after which push the retainer toward the rear to create a proper connection and reconnect the negative Battery Cable. Reprogramming of the pcm follows installation completion.
