- Q: How to replace the right camshaft on 2006 Cadillac DTS?A: Start the right Camshaft replacement by removing first the right Camshaft cover together with the Camshaft Position Sensor. The Crankshaft must rotate to tdc compression stroke of #1 cylinder while both sprocket drive pins should be at their peak positions. First install the Camshaft holding tool (J44212) above the camshafts followed by using a paint stick to indicate the Timing Chain link next to all Camshaft sprocket timing marks. To install the Timing Chain retention tool (EN 46327) you must first bring the engine wing nut to full extension before positioning the bottom retention tool near the right exhaust Camshaft sprocket and its chain until the hook end reaches a secondary Timing Chain link. After setting the wing nut at its initial position touching the retention tool block do not tighten it before repeating this step on the top retention tool spanning the right intake Camshaft sprocket and chain. Tighten the wing nuts alternatively to secure the chain. Apply an open wrench tool to the hex shape of the camshafts while you remove the Camshaft sprocket bolts and finally the Camshaft sprockets. Start by gradually loosening Camshaft bearing cap bolts until no valve spring pressure remains and then remove both bearing caps. The Camshaft holding tool (J44212) as well as camshafts, followers must also be removed. The cleaning process requires inspection of camshafts before applying lubrication from gm p/n 12345001 or an equivalent appropriate for the roller pivot pocket and valve slot areas of the Camshaft followers. Fit each Camshaft follower onto the valve tip and stable hydraulic lash adjuster while keeping the components aligned properly. Lubricate the Camshaft carriers and the Camshaft carriers as well as both Camshaft lobes and Camshaft journals. Install the Camshaft into the Camshaft carriers by placing it with sprocket drive pins at the upper part of rotation while maintaining a neutral position while following the Camshaft bearing cap identification marks for correct installation. Proceed to lubricate the Camshaft bearing caps before assembly according to their identification marks. Tighten the bearing cap bolts to 5 nm (44 inch lbs.) and continue tightening another 30 degrees using the angle meter (J45059). After Camshaft alignment put back the Camshaft holding tool (J44212) while making sure the Camshaft sprocket drive pins connect correctly. Use an open wrench to maintain sprocket stability when screwing in bolts to 120 nm (89 ft. Lbs.) after positioning the intake and exhaust Camshaft sprockets correctly using the paint marks left from disassembly. To finish the procedure remove the Timing Chain tool (EN 46327) then check sprocket alignment before taking out the holding tool (J44212) then install the position sensor before placing on the right cam cover.
