2008 Chevrolet HHR Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the rear disc brake pads on 2008 Chevrolet HHR?
A: Check the brake master cylinder reservoir fluid before replacing the rear disc brake pads. Drain enough fluid when its level sits above midway between maximum and minimum marks. Lift the vehicle and then take off both tire and wheel parts. Two matching wheel nuts should be hand-tigtened onto wheel studs that are opposite each other to fix the rotor to the hub. Install a large c-clamp on the brake caliper body with ends pushed towards its rear and the Brake Pad. Tighten just enough to push the piston in 1 mm (0.039 inch). Use a wrench on the brake caliper guide pins to remove the bolts while keeping the caliper supported with mechanic wire. Fasten the brake caliper securely to mechanic wire to protect the hydraulic brake hose during work. First keep the hose attached then detach the caliper from its bracket and hang up the assembly. Wash the connecting surfaces of the caliper bracket where the brake pads and retainers attach before removing them from the caliper support. Check if the brake caliper guide pins move smoothly while inspecting their guide pin boots for damage. Replace all parts that do not meet the proper standards. Insert the spanner wrench equipped caliper piston installer into the bore to push the piston all the way back. Place a tiny amount of high temperature silicone brake lubricant on the pad hardware surfaces of the caliper bracket then attach the Brake Pad retainers. Adhere the sensor-and-equipped Brake Pad to be positioned inboard with facing side ready for wheel rotation forward. Place the brake pads over the caliper bracket before mounting the caliper to its mounting bracket. Secure the brake caliper guide pants by tightening the bolts with a wrench at 35 n.m (26 lb ft). Install tire and wheelassembly while taking away brake wheel nuts for connection between brake rotor and hub. Lower the vehicle afterwards. While keeping the engine turned off press the brake pedal completely two-thirds of its normal range and ease off of it smoothly. Apply the brake for 15 seconds let it rest and repeat up to when the brake pedal feels solid and pads position correctly on the calipers. Afterword top up the master brake reservoir to its specification then run the brake pads over the rotor to achieve maximum surface contact.
