The first step to replace the intermediate side Door Hinge on the body side includes painting the service hinges with body-color paint. You should first move the front seat all the way forward until the b-pillar clears before taking off the door that needs a new hinge. The door in question is the 60 door which is the forward most of the intermediate doors. You need to eliminate all interior trim pieces located at the pillar area. Drilling requires access through a production body side Door Hinge which can be made possible with the use of reciprocating saws so mark the hinge location by placing tape around its perimeter. Before giving a 4 mm (0.16 in) backward shift to the backing plate for the forward most intermediate door (60 door), prepare the 3-hole pattern for marking. A service backing plate goes next onto the production hinge surface for drill countertyping three holes. Then mark the pattern and create center punches on the marked points. Begin by drilling 3 mm (1/8 in) holes through the production hinge and body pillar and protect the inner vehicle areas from resulting metal fragments. Use sandpaper to find the three production welds on the body side hinge surface before punching them for drilling. Drill out the remaining portion of the production hinge using a 19 mm (3/4 inch) rota-broach which stops before reaching the body side hinge pillar point and remove the hinge weld nuggets before you grind the pillar hinge surface flat. Drill 13 mm (33/64 in) holes through the pillar using the drill holes made beforehand as alignment guide. Users must check gm 4901m-d-2000 regarding paint products and avoid mixing paint systems before starting. The pillar hinge mounting region requires paint application which follows gm refinish specification gm 4901m-d-2000 for the recommended painting procedure. Insert the service hinge with backing plate while tightening it to 23 nm (17 lb ft) torque then seal the entire edge with clear silicone to stop water leakage. The door must be mounted again and the front side Door Striker should be adjusted to create smooth alignment between doors. Reinstall the interior pillar trim pieces as the last step of the process.
