Chevrolet Express 3500 Distributor Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the distributor on Chevrolet Express 3500?
A: To replace the Distributor first turn off the ignition and removed the engine cover. You take off the Spark Plug Wires from Distributor Cap by twisting them 1/2 turn and pulling only the boot part. Unscrew the electrical connector at the bottom of the Distributor and remove the screws holding the cap to the Distributor housing and throw them away. Loosen the Distributor Cap and mark with a grease pencil the location of the rotor within the Distributor housing and in relation to the Intake Manifold. Now, remove the mounting clamp and holding-down bolt then, remove the Distributor, watching the rotor spin counter-clockwise 42 degrees. Mark the base of the Distributor again to ensure rotor after installation. In case of using a new Distributor assembly, put two marks on the new housing in the same place as the original. The use of a long screwdriver is used to align the oil pump drive shaft to the drive tab of the Distributor and align rotor with the second mark and guide the Distributor into the engine, aligning the hole in the Distributor hold-down base with the mounting hole in the Intake Manifold. As the Distributor is installed, this should cause the movement of the rotor to take the clockwise direction by 42 degrees, and when fully set, the rotor segment should align with the mark on the Distributor base. If there is misalignment, then take off and replace the Distributor. Mount the Distributor clamp 2 and bolt and apply 25 nm (18 lb ft) of torque, then mount the new Distributor.conversion screws to 2.4 nm'(21 lb in). Replace the electrical connector and the Spark Plug Wires, and complete ignition coil wire installation, with plug wires not contacting any part to avoid grounding or shortinging. When the malfunction indicator lamp comes on and dtc p1345 is recorded, the Distributor has been incorrectly installed. For the second installation procedure, turn the number 1 cylinder to top dead center (TDC) of the compression stroke, position the crankshaft balancer marks with the engine front cover tabs. Mark the Distributor components so they can be assembled in the right way, then align the white paint mark of the Distributor stem with the indent pre-drilled hole on the gear. Alignment of oil pump drive shaft should be accomplished by using a long screwdriver and directing the Distributor into the engine, while ensuring that spark plug towers are in line with the centerline of the engine. If seated, the rotor segment should point at the pointer on the Distributor base; if not, repeat the procedure. Mount the Distributor mounting clamp bolt and tighten to 25 nm (18 lb ft), and install the Distributor Cap and tighten the screws to 2.4 nm (21 lb in). Reconnect the electrical connector, reinstall the spark plugs cables, and make sure that the ignition coil wire is not touching anything. Re-installation of the p1345 code during the procedure of reviewing the dtc and the malfunction indicator lamp enables that the situation to function correctly. For example, if the malfunction indicator lamp will illuminate and the p1345 code is displayed, the user proceeds to re-install the codes following the second procedure. Finally, install the engine cover.
