  • Q: How to replace the oil pan on Chevrolet Uplander?
    A:
    To replace the Oil Pan, first place the engine support fixture (J45907-B). Remove the tire and wheel on the vehicle's right side in front, as well as the right front splash shield. Drain the crankcase by removing the pan plug, then re-install the Drain Plug a turn or two. Leg off of the engine harness clips attaching to the right lower Control Arm, discard the lower Ball Joint castle nut cotter pin, and remove the lower Ball Joint castle nut. Pull apart with the Ball Joint separator (J 41820), the ball stud from the steering knuckle. Then, unfasten the a/c compressor front bolt and nut, rear bolt and set the compressor out of the way. Unbolt the transaxle brace to the engine block/Oil Pan, the transaxle brace to the transaxle, and the transaxle brace. I will disconnect the engine harness electrical connector from the oil level sensor, take off the engine harness clip from the Oil Pan, and remove the Engine Mount. Put an adjustable jack stands below the frame, loosen the left side frame bolts and remove the right side frame bolts. Lower the right side of the frame down enough to remove the Oil Pan and take out the Oil Pan side bolt and the Oil Pan bolt before removing the Oil Pan and gasket. Clean the Oil Pan flanges, rail of the Oil Pan, front cover, rear main bearing cap, and threaded holes. Apply sealer on both sides of the crankshaft rear main bearing cap and press it in with a putty knife, into the gaps. Mount in the Oil Pan Gasket and the Oil Pan, and the Oil Pan bolts to 25 n.m (18 lb ft while mounting the Oil Pan side bolts to 50 N.m (37 lb ft). Lift the right side of the frame and install and tighten the right side frame bolts , and left side frame bolts while making sure that the front frame bolts are tightened to 130 n.m (96 lb ft) and rear frame bolts are tightened to 240 n.m (177 lb ft). Remove the adjustable jack stands, remount the Engine Mount, and attach the engine harness clip to the Oil Pan. Connect the engine harness electrical connector again to the oil level sensor and install the Starter. Set the transaxle brace to the transaxle and Oil Pan, install transaxle brace to transaxle bolt, and torque transaxle brace to Oil Pan bolts 43 n.m (32 lb ft). Mount the transaxle brace onto transaxle bolts and engine block/Oil Pan bolts as well after tightening them with 43 n.m (32 lb ft). Place the a/c compressor on the front stud, fit the front bolt and nut, then tighten to 50 n.m (37 lb ft), then fit the rear bolt and tighten to 50 n.m (37 lb ft). Mount the lower Ball Joint into the steering knuckle, tighten the lower Ball Joint castle nut to 55 n.m (40 lb ft) and align the slots of the castle nut with the Ball Joint stud pin hole if needed fit with a new cotter pin. Last, install the engine harness clips to the front lower right Control Arm, the right front splash shield, and the right front tire and wheel, then uninstall the engine support fixture (J45907-B), and complete the crankcase with new oil.
