Extension Housing Seal, Front

The first step to replace the front transfer case output shaft seal involves removing both the transfer case shield (when present) together with the front propeller shaft. Insert the flat-tipped screwdriver between the inner race to pry it back before you use a small pry bar to extract the inner seal component. A flat-tipped screwdriver or small pry bar should be placed at the interface between the transfer case and outer race of the seal before using it to remove the outer seal parts. The output shaft seal installer (J 43484) attached to the driver handle (J 8092) serves to properly install the seal on the output shaft seal installer (J 43484). The procedure requires use of both tools to install the seal before reinstalling the front propeller shaft. End the procedure by checking and topping up the fluid when needed after reinstalling the transfer case shield when equipped.

The necessary tools to service or repair the front output shaft seal are j 43484 front output shaft seal installer (midyear 1999 and later seal) along with j 35870 front output shaft seal installer (start of production to midyear 1999 seal). Begin the job by lifting the vehicle while removing safety shields from the Transfer Case if your truck model includes them. The service procedure begins with front propeller shaft removal followed by removal of the front output shaft seal starting from the inner sleeve which aids Transfer Case Seal extraction before moving onto the outer area of the seal. The installation process begins by applying dexron(R) iii oil gm p/n 12346143 to the seal mating surfaces before using j 35870 for the start of production to midyear 1999 seal or j 43484 for the midyear 1999 and later seal to place the seal correctly during installation. The installation process requires verification of Transfer Case oil quantity and adding oil when necessary before fixing the front propeller shaft along with optional Transfer Case shields and finally placing the vehicle back on the ground.

Utilize the J42738 Seal Installer (J42738) to install the transfer case input shaft seal.

Use the Transfer Case Rear Bushing Remover and Installer (J45380) by installing the finger section in front of the bushing, attaching the tube and forcing screw, ensuring the forcing screw is backed out, and then using a wrench on the forcing screw to remove the bushing.

Remove the transfer case shield if equipped, followed by the rear propeller shaft.

Raise the vehicle and remove the front propeller shaft.

Check the fluid level and add fluid if necessary.

Reinstall the transfer case to the adapter and lower the vehicle.

Add oil as necessary.

Raise the vehicle.

Raise the vehicle and remove the front propeller shaft.
